Counselling

Counselling Helps

At times in our lives, we may experience emotional distress and pain arising from various external factors: life changes, relationship break-up, redundancy; bereavement for example. We may feel depressed, anxious or confused. Perhaps we feel stressed or face a difficult illness. It can be that the problem may be from our past too. Sometimes the cause can be unclear where low mood or anxiety have become overwhelming. We may struggle on our own to find a solution, make sense of things, or to find a way forward - sometimes this feels just too difficult a task to do on our own.

Through counselling people have a place, outside of immediate circle of family and friends, where they can unburden their problems and thoughts. It is a place where people can experience being listened to without judgment and where they can feel understood.

Counselling can provide people with support and help to manage or overcome difficulties. Past events can be explored to help a person understand their responses. With the help of a counsellor people can find ways to understand their difficulties and explore ways to manage and lessen the distress.

What does counselling involve?

Through counselling you can talk with an impartial listener in a confidential, non-judgmental, supportive and respectful environment. This will create the opportunity for you to explore, to a greater depth, the thoughts and feelings which surround the difficulties and issues you are currently facing. As a counsellor, I approach counselling as a mutual journey. I will encourage you to draw upon your own resources, helping to you work through problems through increased awareness and understanding in order to develop self-acceptance and to make any changes that you want in your life.

Sometimes problems and difficulties are better managed and overcome using EMDR. This can be used firstly to support a person’s strengths and resources, and then to desensitise difficult life events so that a person can move forward.
